Are you wondering if your business is a good fit for Pinterest marketing? As a Pinterest specialist, the question I get asked the most is, “Will my business even work on Pinterest?” Spoiler alert, the answer for most businesses is yes! As a search engine, Pinterest is a powerful platform that can help businesses of all sizes and niches increase visibility, engagement, and sales.
But if you’re still not sure I have broken down the 3 main things that your business should have in place to get the most out of marketing on Pinterest:
1. You create regular content for your business
Firstly to get the most out of Pinterest you need to have a simple and time-saving way of consistently creating fresh pins. Pinterest is all about sharing ideas and inspiration and answering your audience’s questions, so you’ll want to make sure you have fresh pins to share.
The easiest way to do this is to use the regular content that you are already producing within your business. This could be new product listings, new website pages or landing pages, blog posts, podcast episodes, youtube videos, or even the regular posts on your social media accounts would be a great source of content for you to get started creating your pins. Although I would be cautious of only relying on your other social media accounts in the long term, see my other blog “Is your business Instagram glitch proof”
By using the content you are already creating in your business you will then be able to create a regular pinning strategy. That strategy will then give you a plan of how to break down your content into multiple pins utilising the different URLs (website addresses) linked to each piece of content. Once you have an initial strategy in place you can use the same process for every new piece of content you create in your business ensuring that you can keep pinning the fresh on Pinterest month after month.
2. Your business serves a national/global audience.
The pins that you create can be seen by anyone around the world and Pinterest has over 400 million users worldwide. This is why Pinterest is better suited to businesses that serve a national or global audience.
For product businesses, this means that you are able to ship your products to different parts of the country you are based or even around the world. For service businesses, this would either mean some element of your business is online like an online course or you can deliver sessions via Zoom or you are happy to travel to deliver your services.
While a local business can use Pinterest and include location-specific keywords in their pins the reality is that Pinterest users are often looking for inspiration, answer to questions or ideas rather than specific local businesses. However if for example a local salon also had a youtube channel with videos for creating different hairstyles at home then you could pin about that side of the business as well as local keyworded pins.
It is also important to note that while Pinterest is a global platform, it does have a primarily English-speaking user base. This means that if your business primarily serves non-English-speaking customers, Pinterest may not be the best platform for you.
3. Your products or services solve a problem for others
Lastly, your products or services should solve a problem for your potential customers. This is the key to successful marketing on any platform, and Pinterest is no exception. When you think about the products or services your business provides it may not be obvious straight away what problem it solves but the secret to great marketing is that all businesses solve a problem for their customers in some way.
These problems could range from the more obvious Pinterest businesses such as those providing unique gift ideas, offering home decor inspiration and this season’s fashion and make-up styles. But there are businesses solving problems that may seem less obvious to Pinterest who are seeing great results such as those that can help you file a tax return, offer small business legal advice, helping you to market your business online and since covid businesses in the health and wellbeing area have seen huge growth on the platform.
The best way to check if your business will work on Pinterest is to search for the most common questions relating to your business yourself within the platform and see what results you get. You could also survey your existing customers to find out what challenges they’re facing and experiment by creating pins to answer those questions.
