5 Reasons Why Your Business Should Prioritise Building an Email List

Running your own business while juggling the demands of motherhood is no small feat. Whether you’re a passionate crafter, a savvy online shop owner, or run a service business to help fellow mums feel good about themselves it can take time and effort to grow your audience. If that audience is only on your social media platforms you could risk of losing them if the platform goes down or you get locked out of your account. That is why I want to let you know about the one tool that can make your life easier and secure your audience should any happen to your social media accounts – and that is an email list.

In fact, there are 5 reasons why as a busy mum running your own business it would really help to safeguard your business to set some time aside to set up an email list. Let’s explore how owning your email list can be a game changer compared to relying on social media alone, and how email marketing can outperform social media in terms of conversion rates.

1. Direct Connection with your audience

Social media is fantastic for engagement, but we can guarantee that everyone who follows us will see our posts, it’s left to the fate of the ever-changing algorithm. With an email list, you have a direct line to your subscribers’ inboxes and it’s then their choice to read and engage with your email. With email marketing your messages get delivered straight to your subscribers ensuring they don’t miss out on your updates, offers and valuable content.

2. Ownership and Control

When you build an email list, you own it. Unlike social media platforms, which can change their policies or even shut down, your email list is a part of your business that is entirely under your control. You can decide what content your audience receives, when they see it and the action steps you want them to take next. With an email list, you won’t lose contact with your audience if a platform goes out of fashion or ceases to exist, remember MySpace? An email list is a long-term strategy for your business’s future.

3. Higher Conversion Rates

Did you know the average conversion rate for an email list is 5-10% whereas on social media its only around 1-2% depending on the platform. Why is this? Well, you usually get people onto your email list through a freebie or special offer so they are already interested in your business. This is known as a warm audience which makes them much more likely to buy your products or sign up for your services.

4. Personalised communication

Email marketing platforms such as Mailerlite allow you to personalise your emails with each subscriber’s name. It’s so much nicer to receive an email that feels like it’s been written to you directly. You also have the ability to send different emails to each group on your list which is perfect if you want to tailor your content even further. This also works the other way too, you can exclude groups from your email so if you are promoting a product or service the people on your email list who have already bought it won’t then receive the email. This all depends on how you set up your email marketing in the first place, so is one of the things I ensure anyone I work with understands so they can make the most out of their email list.

5. Builds Trust and Authority

Are there emails that come into your inbox that you open without fail? That you love to find out what’s been happening in their business or the latest offers they have. This could be how your audience feels about your emails when they get used to regularly receiving them. On most email marketing platforms you can schedule your emails so even if you take a break you can keep in contact with your email list which builds trust. Once you have your audiences’ trust they are more likely to turn to you when they need the products or services your business provides.
